BEIJING, July 29 – A Beijing bar is hosting a three-day blues festival starting on Friday, featuring a dozen bands and soloists from around the world.
Cafe CD Blues, on the Third Ring Road near the Agricultural Exhibition Center, and its previous location a few blocks further south, has been home to the city's alternative music scene since the 1980s.
It has been owned for nearly two years by veteran R&B singer and bass player "Big John" Zhang Ling.
Playing on Friday from 7 pm are Chinese band Little Inn, the US' Peter Muchinson Band, Bobo Stump from Japan, Matt Cooper (featuring Swiss Werner Fischer on guitar) and Defy, a Chinese rockabilly group. The night finishes at 1 am.
On Saturday, Joseph J. Johanna from New Zealand will perform folk blues from 3:30 pm, followed by Chinese band Out of Control, then Fernando Fidanza, the Peter Muchinson band again, Zhang Di and Lucy in an East meets West performance, and then the Big John Blues Band led by the bar's owner. The evening will finish with a blues jamming session from about 11:15 pm.
Fernando Fidanza will kick things off from 2:30 pm on Sunday with his Italian Blues. He'll be followed with a harp clinic and harmonica competition until 5 pm. Starting at 4:30 pm outside will be another set by Joseph J. Johanna, then Hong Kong's Chit Chat band, Hoochie Coochie Gentlemen, Bobo Stump and finally, The Chinese Hell Cats from 10:30 pm.
The cost of admission is 150 yuan ($23), including a free drink, for each day, or 400 yuan, including a free drink every day, for all three days.
"Beijing will have seen nothing like it," says one of the event's promoters, Beijing-based US businessman Craig Quick.
"This is a brilliant line-up of extremely talented musicians who know and love the blues inside out. It's going to be a tremendous occasion."
In the early 1980s, as bassist for Chinese rock legend Cui Jian, Zhang Lin developed a deep understanding of the development of modern music in China when Western music was considered "capitalist". He used to listen to The Beatles tracks smuggled in from the US.
Zhang studied bass in Australia and returned to China to collaborate with some of the top blues and jazz artists in the country, creating in 1995 China's first jazz fusion band, Tien Square. In 1996, he joined his old band mate, Cui, and International Monetary Fund vice-president John Anderson to form the first blues band in China, The Rhythm Dogs. He released his first solo album, Nu Ren De Ge (A Woman's Song), in 2008, and also runs a musician booking agency.
Many of the world's jazz greats have visited or performed at the CD Blues Cafe and Bar, including Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Garrett and Herbie Hancock's band.
Blues evolved from the unaccompanied vocal music and oral traditions imported from West Africa and rural tunes into a wide variety of styles and subgenres, with regional variations across the US.

ESOPs were introduced to China's power industry in the 1980s but fell from grace in 2007 after the central government discovered illicit profiteering by company executives and other officials tied to regional power companies.
Enterprises with ESOPs took advantage of power system reform to obtain assets from grid companies at low prices – or at no cost. This helped many ESOP enterprises grow rapidly and move into other industry investments. They also generated huge profits thanks to the monopoly power of the grids.
 
At a July conference, SERC Chairman Wang Xudong said the government would push forward reform by launching a pilot program allowing direct purchases of electricity and rural power sector reform.
 
 
The campaign kicked off at state-owned enterprises (SOEs) controlled by the central government in 2008. That's when SOEs examined and registered the stock owned by about 230,000 employees.

Not all government agencies have shared the same attitude toward ESOPs since 2004. Some agency officials said it was enough to dismantle the system's management team shareholding, while others insisted all employee stock should be scrapped.

According to a manager at a local power company, mid-level managers normally could receive more than 100,000 yuan by selling their shares, while lower level employees could receive tens of thousands of yuan.
"Payments were based on the conditions of a company's assets and operation," said an expert at SASAC, adding that the capital involved in the entire campaign could reach 1 billion yuan nationwide.

A report by the National Audit Office in July said affiliate transactions by ESOPs became a major problem for the power sector.
 
 
According to SASAC, 56 holders of 13.5 million yuan worth of stock at 19 enterprises were found to be violating the regulations. The government then required 6,990 employees at 96 companies to sell their shares at pre-set prices.
 
Now that the ESOP system has been mended, power sector reform is expected to accelerate with a new step in the second half of this year.

By the end of 2008, most share portfolios held by senior executives and mid-level managers at State Grid had been dismantled. By the first half of 2009, clean-ups were under way at local power companies as well.
Wrangling over employee-owned shareholding at China's power companies is ending as sector reform enters a new phase.
 
 
The employee shareholder system remained intact, however, and later became an obstacle to further reform. And an initial regulatory vacuum for ESOPs endangered state assets.
Companies with ESOPs included leading power enterprises in provinces and autonomous regions in 2002, when the central government started separating the power generating and grid systems. The reform was seen as a prelude to industry expansion.
 
The distribution network of national giant State Power Corp. was divided in half between State Grid and China Southern Power Grid. Meanwhile, State Power's generation assets were allocated among five electricity producers.

Six months later, SASAC issued new guidelines to further regulate employee shareholding in power companies. However, industry experts said implementing that regulation would be difficult, as many enterprises with ESOPs were taking a wait-and-see attitude, or just trying to get around the rule.

The U.S. government is conducting its census this year. The count takes place every 10 years to determine how many seats each state will have in the House of Representatives. But in 72 years, when the 2010 census becomes public, it's very likely that average Americans will use the information to search for their family roots.
A popular hobby
For two days in April, more than 2,000 people came to the National Archives for the Sixth Annual Genealogy Fair, a free event with dozens of experts offering advice to Americans researching their family history.
"We get more people every year," says Constance Potter. An archivist who specializes in documents of interest to genealogists, Potter says the first genealogy fair attracted about 500 people. Last year,franklin et marshall (http://www.franklinmarshallboutiques.com), there were 1,500.
It was the fifth genealogy fair for Shirley Jones. "You want to know where you came from, who (were) your parents, who your forefathers were. I wanted to know where I came from."

TV launches a craze

"That was the first thing that created "roots" mania in America," says professional genealogist Megan Smolenyak. "Now we're experiencing a whole new wave, a fresh influx."
Smolenyak has researched the family history of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. She is an advisor on two new television series reflecting the renewed interest in genealogy. Both Who Do You Think You Are? and Faces of America explored the family histories of celebrities.
The National Archives holds annual genealogy fairs to help people learn more about searching for their roots.
Already a big hit in the United Kingdom, where it originated, Who Do You Think You Are? has been renewed for a second season on American TV.
Smolenyak hopes the new shows will spark some fresh recruits to family history, but she says the current surge of interest has more to do with the internet.
Connecting to the past through the web
"You can get a running start with what is online." She notes that Ancestry.com, one of the paid membership sites researchers can use, has over four billion records. "It's nice, you can sit at home and search in your pjs (pajamas), go through census records and that sort of thing."
Smolenyak, who is chief family historian for Ancestry.com, says people spend millions of hours on that site every month, but you can't find everything online, which is why people often end up at the National Archives.

"There he is. We found him," she says after scanning a spool of film through a viewer in a darkened room. "I wanted to get that last relative," Summer says, "and that was this one from the Revolutionary War, so I'm tickled. I don't think I can go back any farther with my father's family, but I'll keep trying."
Archivist Constance Potter isn't surprised that Summer isn't ready to give up entirely. She says genealogy can be addictive. "You find one thing out and it can lead to something else. It's like a detective story. It really is. And you just keep adding on the clues." And those clues help researchers understand not only where they came from, but who they are.

Zhang studied bass in Australia and returned to China to collaborate with some of the top blues and jazz artists in the country, creating in 1995 China's first jazz fusion band, Tien Square. In 1996, he joined his old band mate, Cui, and International Monetary Fund vice-president John Anderson to form the first blues band in China, The Rhythm Dogs. He released his first solo album, Nu Ren De Ge (A Woman's Song), in 2008, and also runs a musician booking agency.
Many of the world's jazz greats have visited or performed at the CD Blues Cafe and Bar, including Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Garrett and Herbie Hancock's band.
Blues evolved from the unaccompanied vocal music and oral traditions imported from West Africa and rural tunes into a wide variety of styles and subgenres, with regional variations across the US.

         Metal Detecting for fun or profit can be one of the most exciting and rewarding of hobbies. A metal detector can cost very little, as low as $50 or higher that $400 for a top of the line model. This is one hobby where you really do get what you pay for, because the more expensive top of the line detectors use the most advanced technology and they have the best features available.
 
          Metal Detectors use one of three types of technology:
 
          BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillation) - Metal Detectors using BFO technology have two coils of wire, one large coil is located in the search coil of the detector, the other small coil of wire is located within the System Control Pack. Each coil of wire is connected to an oscillator that produces pulses of current. These pulses of current pass through the coils generating radio waves. A receiver housed within the System Control Pack receives the radio waves and makes a series of tones based upon the frequencies of the radio waves. When the detector search coil passes over a coin or other metal item a magnetic field is created around the coin or metal item, this magnetic field causes interference with the frequency of the radio waves generated by the search coil. And changes the tone produced by the reciever.

The BFO technology is the easiest and cheapest to make, thus the prices of the detectors are cheap. The only problem is, BFO technology is very limited when compared to PI and BFO detectors, and the ability to distinguish between junk metals and silver or other coins is very poor.
 
          PI (Pulse Induction) - Metal Detectors using PI technology sometimes use a single coil or a series of coils working together as a transmitter and receiver. Short bursts of electrical current are send through a coil of wire, causing a magnetic field. When the burst of electrical current ends the magnetic field reverses polarity. The other coil called the 'Receiver Coil' acts just like the name implies it receives frequencies or data that come or 'bounce' back from the objects the transmitter coil detects in the search area. This type of Metal Detector is great for it's ability for being able to distinguish between different types of metals.
 
          The first metal detector my wife and I bought together cost about $69.00 it was one of them cheap ones that used the 'BFO' technology. This was one of them metal detectors you see in the magazines that sell other household items, etc. You can buy cheap metal detectors like these at most Radio Shack stores, and some K Marts and Wal Marts. The first day we took the metal detector outside we started finding some neet things and my wife and I were hooked. We did find our share of junk items in the yard, like aluminum foil, nails and the usual pull tabs and junk metal. But we also found 7 old diecast cars in great condition. They were all different and were 'TOOTSIE' diecast vehicles. I looked on eBay and the bunch was worth around $15 or more. BEIJING, July 29 – A Beijing bar is hosting a three-day blues festival starting on Friday, featuring a dozen bands and soloists from around the world.
Cafe CD Blues, on the Third Ring Road near the Agricultural Exhibition Center, and its previous location a few blocks further south, has been home to the city's alternative music scene since the 1980s.
It has been owned for nearly two years by veteran R&B singer and bass player "Big John" Zhang Ling.
Playing on Friday from 7 pm are Chinese band Little Inn, the US' Peter Muchinson Band, Bobo Stump from Japan, Matt Cooper (featuring Swiss Werner Fischer on guitar) and Defy, a Chinese rockabilly group. The night finishes at 1 am.
On Saturday, Joseph J. Johanna from New Zealand will perform folk blues from 3:30 pm, followed by Chinese band Out of Control, then Fernando Fidanza, the Peter Muchinson band again, Zhang Di and Lucy in an East meets West performance, and then the Big John Blues Band led by the bar's owner. The evening will finish with a blues jamming session from about 11:15 pm.
Fernando Fidanza will kick things off from 2:30 pm on Sunday with his Italian Blues. He'll be followed with a harp clinic and harmonica competition until 5 pm. Starting at 4:30 pm outside will be another set by Joseph J. Johanna, then Hong Kong's Chit Chat band, Hoochie Coochie Gentlemen, Bobo Stump and finally, The Chinese Hell Cats from 10:30 pm.
The cost of admission is 150 yuan ($23), including a free drink, for each day, or 400 yuan, including a free drink every day, for all three days.
"Beijing will have seen nothing like it," says one of the event's promoters, Beijing-based US businessman Craig Quick.
"This is a brilliant line-up of extremely talented musicians who know and love the blues inside out. It's going to be a tremendous occasion."
In the early 1980s, as bassist for Chinese rock legend Cui Jian, Zhang Lin developed a deep understanding of the development of modern music in China when Western music was considered "capitalist". He used to listen to The Beatles tracks smuggled in from the US.
