The physician regarded his questioner curiously with half-shut eyes.
After a professional scrutiny, prolonged to the limit of politeness,
'Pardon me,' he said; 'one asking information should be willing to
impart it. Are you wounded?' he added, smiling.
   'Not seriously--it seems.'
The man removed the unmilitary hat, put his hand to his head, passed
it through his hair and, withdrawing it, attentively considered the
palm.
'I was struck by a bullet and have been unconscious. It must have
been a light, glancing blow: I find no blood and feel no pain. I will
not trouble you for treatment, but will you kindly direct me to my
command--to any part of the Federal army--if you know?'
Again the doctor did not immediately reply: he was recalling much
that is recorded in the books of his profession--something about lost
identity and the effect of familiar scenes in restoring it. At length he
looked the man in the face, smiled, and said:
'Lieutenant, you are not wearing the uniform of your rank and
service.'
At this the man glanced down at his civilian attire, lifted his
eyes, and said with hesitation:
'That is true. I--I don't quite understand.'
Still regarding him sharply but not unsympathetically, the man of
science bluntly inquired:
   'How old are you?'

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Often Comes as Surprise
You may have heard about young athletes, still teenagers, whose hearts stop beating, sometimes while playing sports. In many of these cases, their parents and doctors find out after the fact that these young athletes have a heart condition. But for those with a specific genetic disease, implantable defibrillators may save their lives. Here is VOA's Carol Pearson. It is a tragic story. A young athlete has a heart attack and dies. Brandon Williams was only 13 years old when he suffered sudden cardiac arrest.Since then, polo ralph lauren (http://www.poloralphlaurensenligne.com), the school Brandon attended has acquired an external defibrillator, doudoune moncler pas cher (http://www.doudoune-monclerpaschere.com/), a device that can shock a heart back into a normal rhythm. But the solution for some people is a miniature, implantable defibrillator.Twenty-two-year-old Paul McSweeney was only 11 when doctors diagnosed him with a genetic heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It causes the heart wall to thicken. Paul's mother, Mary McSweeney, moncler (http://www.doudoune-monclerpaschere.com/), recalls the doctor's instructions. "They said that he should limit his activity, which is really tough for an 11-year-old kid, louboutin pas cher (http://www.christianllouboutinpascher.com/), and that he could live a normal life, but that there was a risk of sudden death."To reduce that risk, ralph lauren pas cher (http://www.poloralphlaurensenligne.com), Paul had a defibrillator implanted in his chest. Later, polo ralph lauren pas cher (http://www.poloralphlaurenaboutique.com/), when he took a nap after the stress of studying for final exams, his heart started beating irregularly. "I just abruptly woke up and I wasn't really sure what had happened at that point in time, and I later went in for a medical check up and they confirmed the fact that I had been defibrillated," he recalls. His mother adds,Moncler sito ufficiale (http://www.giubbottomonclersito.com), "The timing was amazing. He got a defibrillator only months before he needed it and it saved his life."Dr. Barry Maron is an expert hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He and his colleagues studied about 500 patients like Paul with implanted defibrillators. "We have found that it is now possible to change the natural course of the disease for some patients by preventing sudden cardiac death," said Dr. Maron. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.During the course of the study, christian louboutin pas cher (http://www.christianllouboutinpascher.com/), the defibrillators sent electric shocks to more than 100 patients who had irregular heartbeats, saving their lives.Video courtesy of The Journal of the American Medical Association

Ron DiFrancesco's voice softens and trails off. He barely finishes his sentences as he recalls his experience on Sept. 11, 2001. He speaks as if it happened yesterday.
"It was a living hell," he says. "I was mere seconds from death. ... I didn't know I was going to get out."
DiFrancesco is believed to be the last person out of the South Tower of the World Trade Center before it collapsed. According to some reports, he was one of only four people to escape from above the 81st floor.
A decade later, survivor's guilt still weighs heavily on him.
"I will carry with me to my grave whether I should have taken somebody with me," he says, "I still harbor a lot of guilt.
"Time does heal a bit, but it doesn't make you forget what happened. And I think, for our generation, it's our marking point in history. It changed the world that day," he says.
DiFrancesco prefers not to go into detail about his horrifying experience on 9/11. He says it forces him to relive the nightmare. In the past 10 years, he has given only a few interviews, including one for John Geiger's book The Third Man Factor and another for an article in the Ottawa Citizen. Based on those accounts, this is what happened to DiFrancesco:
The first plane had just struck the North Tower, and from his office on the 84th floor of the South Tower, DiFrancesco, a 37-year-old Canadian money-market broker for Euro Brokers, could see smoke billowing from the building. Moments after he left his office to evacuate, the second plane smashed into the South Tower, hitting the building between the 77th and 85th floors.
DiFrancesco was thrown against a wall by the force of the impact, and then he rushed to the nearest stairwell and headed down. On the way, he ran into a group of people trying to escape; they told him to go up the stairs instead, because the flames were too bad below.
As they debated which way to go, they heard someone calling for help. DiFrancesco and his colleague Brian Clark, an executive vice president at Euro Brokers, went to rescue the man, but DiFrancesco became overwhelmed by smoke and had to turn back.
He began to go up the stairs to find clear air, but the doors on each landing were locked, a safety mechanism to keep smoke from filling the whole building in the event of a fire. Panic set in as it became harder to breathe, so he turned around and started back down.
He reached a landing in the impact zone and joined others lying on the floor, gasping for air. But a voice told him to get up and keep going. He ran down the stairs, covering his face with his forearms as he fought through the flames.
Finally he reached the ground floor, where a security guard directed him to a different exit. As he reached it, he heard a giant roar as the building began to collapse. He turned and saw a fireball heading right at him. Days later, he woke up in the hospital with lacerations on his head, burns all over his body, and a broken bone in his back.
Ten years later, DiFrancesco, who is now 47 and living in Toronto, Canada, says the memories and the aftermath of 9/11 permeate his everyday life.
"The scars on my head and my arms remind me every day how fortunate I am," he says. "There are mementos throughout the house. In our living room, we have quite a few pictures of New York and a picture of the World Trade Center. We have a couple of albums of cards that people had sent, and there are some memorial books we look at [too]. They actually gave my wife the watch that was on my wrist on 9/11. It was broken, but it stopped at the exact time the building came down."
But the effects of his experience that day go much deeper than his scars and mementos. DiFrancesco's near-death experience changed his entire outlook on life.
"For me, being so close to death, I don't fear dying or moving on," he says. "When I was almost down and out, I did see the light, and I was prepared to go, but I'm here. … If I was to die tomorrow I would hate leaving my wife and kids, but I don't fear dying now."
DiFrancesco's whole mentality changed, too. He's constantly on alert, even when there's no imminent threat.
"I'm very aware of my surroundings and what's going on, what I'm doing, and what other people are doing," he says. "Whenever I go into a building or a room, I need to know where the exit is, because that day I wasn't in control, and I almost didn't make it out. It's a bit obsessive I think, but it's changed the way I think and the way I act."
Even seemingly normal occurrences cause terrifying flashbacks.
"When I see tall buildings and planes, it jogs my memory," he says. "Loud noises [and chaos] really bother me. I'm a little claustrophobic, so when [I'm] in a big crowd, it gets to me a lot. I also find screaming and yelling really gets to me."
But out of the pain and chaos came compassion, hope, and a deeper meaning to the idea of paying it forward. DiFrancesco and his family have always been religious and involved in community service, but the overwhelming outreach from their friends and neighbors after 9/11 moved them to make it a bigger part of their lives.
"When I was in the hospital, people were taking care of meals for the family, and that went on for months," he says. His community went out of its way to help get the DiFrancesco family back on their feet.
"My car was left at the train station, and my wife didn't know where it was. A neighbor came and found my car and brought it back to us," he explains. "And I only had the one key that was melted in the World Trade Center, so he went and got new keys made for my car."
The lengths to which his community went to support them inspired DiFrancesco and his wife more than ever to pay it forward and to teach their kids to do the same. Now, DiFrancesco is on the board of two charities: Villa Colombo, a home for Italian seniors, and Camp Trillium, a charity that promotes and offers recreational experiences for children with cancer and their families.
For the DiFrancescos, volunteering for Camp Trillium is a family event.
"I participate in this cancer bike ride ... we ride basically 60 miles a day for four days," he says. "My children and my wife are actively involved [too]. My two older children ride with me, and my two younger [kids] and my wife volunteer for the four days."
DiFrancesco has always enjoyed cycling, especially for a good cause, but ever since 9/11, his riding has taken on a different meaning, and he rides for an hour or two almost daily.
"I love the peacefulness of the road, riding my bike, and riding in a pack ... [it's] a bit of healing for me," he says. "I find it cathartic."
The healing process is an ongoing one for his family. Over the years, DiFrancesco and his wife have been collecting friends' and families' stories of how 9/11 affected them -- and may even consider putting them into a book.
"We both find it fascinating what you were doing that day ... people went home, picked up their kids from school, and hugged them and kept them close," he says. "Just hearing [their] stories ... it's interesting to find out what everyone was doing on that day."
There are still questions that may never be answered, and survivor's guilt is ever-present.
"I don't understand all of it," he says. "Why did I survive and 61 of my colleagues didn't?"
For DiFrancesco, though, one message is clear.
"When your number is up, He will call you. Coming so close to death, I believe you can't change destiny," he says. "Be happy with every day we have here."

VENICE, Italy — Veteran action star Jet Li and action director Tony Ching are expanding their repertoire into the children's fairy tale, but with an adult audience also in mind.
Their latest movie "The Sorcerer and the White Snake" made its world premier out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Friday.
The movie is based on a classic Chinese fairy tale that has entered the popular consciousness as seamlessly as Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty in the West, with cast members saying they recalled hearing it first from their grandmothers.
But Ching said he sought to put a modern twist on the fable by mixing action with special effects.
"The idea was to blend Chinese tradition, which is martial arts, with Western technology," Ching said in an interview.
His goal was to make a movie that would appeal to adults by emphasizing the film's central love story.
"I think first it's a children's fairy tale, but it also is about the new generation who are willing to give up everything for love," he said.
In the film, Li plays a sorcerer whose job it is to subdue demons — good or evil — and slay monsters. The White Snake, a benign demon played by Eva Huang sporting an elegant computer-generated white snake tail, takes a risk for love, using her powers to become human in her pursuit of a young herbalist whom she spies gathering flowers.
The action takes place against a fantasy-filled landscape of mystical craggy peaks and a cauldron of molten lava where Jet's sorcerer destroys an evil demon.
Ching said the challenge was to combine the action with computer graphics.
"We did not want to jump from one to the other," but fuse them, Ching said.
The film is set for worldwide distribution, and Huang suggested it would help the rest of the world understand China better.
"I think people who want to know China should watch this movie," she said.

People are obsessed with dieting and weight loss! Don't believeme? Just tune-in to any source of advertising...you're instantlybombarded with the latest diet schemes and "Hollywood" foodfads.

Here in America, we have built a thriving industry trying tocontrol our weight and treat the consequences of over-indulgence.The cost of weight loss and obesity related health caretreatments is staggering...Americans alone spend around $114billion every year! And even with all this interest in losingweight, doudoune moncler pas cher (http://www.doudoumonclerquincy.com/), we continue to pack on the pounds like never before...

          - A whopping 64 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight orobese...up about eight percent from earlier estimates.

          - Among children and teens ages 6-19, 15 percent or almost ninemillion are overweight...triple the rate in 1980!

          - Nearly one-third of all adults are now classified as obese.

For Americans, modern life may be getting TOO easy. Our cushylifestyle means we expend less energy and consequently need fewercalories to sustain our normal body weight.

Think about it for a moment...

Entertainment no longer requires energy expenditure. In fact,it's usually quite the opposite. We now entertain ourselves inthe comfort of our own home while watching TV and munching on ourfavorite snack. Whether it's television, computers, remotecontrols, air jordan (http://www.airjordanchaussure.com), or automobiles, moncler quincy pas cher (http://www.doudoumonclerquincy.com), we are moving less and burning fewercalories. Common activities that were once a part of our normalroutine have disappeared...activities like climbing stairs, pushing a lawn mower or walking to get somewhere.

And please do not misunderstand me...I appreciate comfortableliving just as much as the next person. But, here is theproblem...

With all of our modern day conveniences and "cushy" style ofliving we have not adjusted our caloric intake to compensate forour decreased caloric expenditure. We consume more calorie richand nutrient deficient foods than ever before. Consider a few ofthe following examples comparing what we eat "today" vs the1970's (U.S. Department of Agriculture survey):

          - We are currently eating more grain products, but almost all ofthem are refined grains (white bread, etc.). Grain consumptionhas jumped 45 percent since the 1970's, from 138 pounds of grainsper person per year to 200 pounds! Only 2 percent of the wheatflour is consumed as whole wheat.

          - Our consumption of fruits and vegetables has increased, butonly because French fries and potato chips are included asvegetables. Potato products account for almost a third of our"produce" choices.

          - We're drinking less milk, but we've more than doubled ourcheese intake. Cheese now outranks meat as the number one sourceof saturated fat in our diets.

          - We've cut back on red meat, but have more than made up for theloss by increasing our intake of chicken (battered and fried), sothat overall, we're eating 13 pounds more meat today than we didback in the 1970's.

          - We're drinking three times more carbonated soft drinks thanmilk, jordan chaussure (http://www.airjordanchaussure.com), compared to the 1970's, when milk consumption was twicethat of pop.

          - We use 25 percent less butter, but pour twice as much vegetableoil on our food and salads, so our total added fat intake hasincreased 32 percent.

Having worked overseas nearly 30 years, Chinese-born painter Jia Lu has made unique contributions in helping Western audiences understand more about the East through her canvases.
She was recently short-listed in the “Ten Most-focused Chinese in the World" by none other than the Global Times. The reason? “Her paintings fuse Chinese and Western elements, showing a modern China with beautiful colors," according to the panel.
“I have a deep sense that my mission to help the rest of the world understand China is not only an artistic goal but a personal responsibility," Lu says, when asked how she felt. “This award reminds me of the importance of that obligation."
Her father, Lu Enyi, was a famous painter who taught her to paint when she was very young. Like many painters of the time, she learned Chinese ink painting first, and was taught by master painter Fan Zeng.
But like many artists who traveled abroad in the 1980s, Lu felt lost in the collision of cultures, and turned to different ways of appreciating art.
When she left China for Canada in 1983, she quickly discovered that, for her new friends, without an understanding of Chinese culture and history, her art was “simply too alien to understand."
“In Chinese painting, we value the traditions passed from one generation to the next; for Westerners, true art is about originality and individual expression," Lu told the Global Times. “Ink painting explores the expressiveness of black ink and the bamboo brush; but to a Westerner, who has never held a brush before and is used to the color and richness of oil painting, my art seemed dull and lifeless."
Although her paintings sold well in the overseas Chinese community, to reach a larger audience, communicating essential concepts of traditional Asian culture to a Western audience was key.
Her solution? Borrow the techniques and expressive power of oil painting, with its illusionistic perspective and realism, and substitute Asian content. The method is known as “Jiechuan Chuhai", or “Crossing the sea in a borrowed boat."
“We have a unique, complex and rich culture. But we share [that] among ourselves, using a difficult written and spoken language, raising a high wall that excludes the rest of the world." Lu says. “By borrowing Western art history to communicate Eastern ideas, I have been able to tear down a small section of that wall."
Having grown up in a Confucian society that emphasized personal sacrifice, selflessness and hard work, Lu discovered her Western friends appreciated these values much more than their wealth and luxury.
Her painting was infused with Buddhism, an Eastern spirituality cherished by many Westerners.
Having first visited Dunhuang in 1980, spending several weeks copying its Buddhist art – some of the rarest early examples of Chinese figurative art – directly from the cave walls, Lu studied figure painting.
But it was not until she worked in Japan in the early 1990s that she began to explore their significance, finding their ideas represented what was most enduring and special about Chinese culture: compassion, mindfulness, a deep respect for learning and wisdom and a belief in the perfectibility of the human state.
Lu began to show her works in China: at the Shanghai International Art Fair, Art Beijing and CIGE expos, and found how “vibrant the Chinese art market had become in the so-many-years I’d been away, and how open it was to new ideas."
“I am both humbled and inspired that my work has been recognized in this way by the Global Times. It is an honor to be included among the other outstanding artists whom I have admired for so long," says Lu.
“But in the end, I think it is not important if I live or work in China or in the West, The important thing is to continue to paint for a global audience, to improve my own art as far as I am able, and to strive to be a better person."

The 6 Most Horrific Bosses of All Time
Who?Do you ever dream of making enough money that you can pay (or force) people to act out your video games for you? Well George Pullman basically built a real-life version of The Sims.Good or bad? You decide. Why He Was An !@#$%^& Boss:Whenever you hear a historical figure referred to as an "industrialist," you know he was pretty shitty to work for. That certainly went for George Pullman, doudoune moncler pas cher (http://www.doudoumonclerquincy.com/), an industrialist who made his fortune in the railroads. But Pullman wanted to be a father to his employees. An abusive, scary, probably drunken father. So he bought a huge chunk of land and built a town on it for his employees to live in.Well, that kind of makes sense. Save on the commute, build a sense of unity. It's the kind of thing that could almost work, abercrombie & fitch (http://www.abercrombieandfitcheparis.com/), if the guy in charge wasn't completely batshit.Just like some people can't play The Sims for more than an hour before inventing ways to torture the inhabitants, Pullman's town quickly became his own little kingdom-slash-prison. He forbade any free press, public meetings or bars. He would send guys to barge into employees' homes and make sure they were being kept spotless. Anybody who failed to meet Pullman's cleanliness standards were given 10 days to pack up and get out.But if the others didn't like it, they could just leave, right? Well, Pullman started paying his employees in what he called Pullman Scrip, which could only be spent in the town and could not be exchanged for actual money. And while running your own town according to your crazy !@#$ rules is kind of terrifying just on the face of it, things only got worse when the company started going downhill and everyone's wages were cut. To compliment the imaginary wage cuts, rent and the imaginary prices at the company stores were kept right where they were, squashing employees between a financial hammer and anvil. The situation eventually exploded into a strike that got so out of control that federal troops had to be brought in.How much did the workers hate Pullman? When he died, they had to bury his body in a steel and concrete vault, which was itself buried under a few tons of concrete. Why? Because--and we're not making this up--they were afraid that employees would dig up and beat the !@#$ out of his corpse, otherwise.#5.J. Edgar HooverWho?J. Edgar Hoover was the first director of the FBI, from 1935 until 1972,nike air jordan (http://www.airjordanchaussure.com), and he was crazy for every minute of it. Not coincidentally, Hoover's also the reason FBI directors are limited to 10-year terms of service. Why He Was An !@#$%^& Boss:The world may never know exactly how insane J. Edgar Hoover was. That's the thing about holding an unelected position in an organization specializing in undercover work and keeping rooms full of secret files with the demand that they be destroyed upon your death. Stories have been boiling up about the man pretty much from the moment he expired, each more bizarre than the last. Nobody knows which are true, but they all paint a picture of a man about five minutes away from a shooting rampage. One biography says he kept FBI employees on call 24 hours a day to just do random !@#$ around his house, like repair his lawnmower. When he found a small animal turd on his patio, he demanded that agents take it to the lab to analyze it, completely sure he was being stalked by a wild animal. He then allegedly had them set a trap on the patio, which promptly killed the neighbor's cat.He also loved to scrawl almost unreadable notes and instructions in the margins of memos. Then when one memo came his way with barely enough room on the edges for him to write in, he scrawled, "WATCH THE BORDERS."Nobody had any clue what that meant, and they were too terrified of the crazy old bastard to ask him. So, they put out word to the Border Patrol to watch both the Canadian and Mexican borders for anything unusual. They arrested American Communist Party leader Gus Hall during the crackdown. A week later, staff finally figured out that "WATCH THE BORDERS" meant "leave more room in the margins of these memos because I like to write stuff in them."Also, he apparently had a file of nude photos. Not of porn models; of everyone. He had nude pictures of Eleanor Roosevelt. Why? Just in case.He is said to have monitored every aspect of agents' lives, telling them where they could and couldn't live, what clubs they could and couldn't join and what to wear. He allegedly fired agents because he thought their heads looked too small. But life under Hoover wasn't all Michael Scott-esque lovable eccentricity. Melvin Purvis (as in, "the guy Christian Bale plays in Public Enemies") pissed Hoover off by having the nerve to track down three of the most infamous gangsters in American history (Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd and Johnny Depp's John Dillinger) and not give Hoover the credit. Hoover harassed Purvis until he left the FBI, then supposedly went around trying to sabotage all future jobs Purvis tried to get in the years after.Wait, you're still picturing Eleanor Roosevelt naked, aren't you?#4. Henry Clay FrickWho?Henry Clay Frick was the Chairman of Carnegie Steel, and also proud owner of the titles "the most hated man in America" and "Harry Cock-Bag."Not to be confused with this hairy cock bag. Here's a fun story about Frick: He started a fishing club for himself and his wealthy friends, buying up a lake in Pennsylvania, just for them. Its dam was constantly leaking, but not wanting to spend the cash to fix it, he let it go until the day it broke and flooded a town, killing 2,000 people. At which point Frick admitted responsibility and... oh, wait, no. He hid behind his lawyers and spent the money on legal fees instead. Why He Was An !@#$%^& Boss:In 1892, the world was just figuring out that everything was more awesome when it was made of steel. Prices were going up and the steel producers of the world (like Andre Carnegie and Mr. Frick) were living in houses made of bling. It just so happened the union's contract was up at a plant Frick was in charge of, and they came to the table asking for a raise.Frick lit a cigar with a million dollar bill and counter-offered... a 22 percent pay cut. When the union rejected the deal, Frick's counter-offer involved locking out workers, then installing sniper towers around the plant and cannons that could shoot boiling hot liquids on anyone who approached. He also put up a huge barbed wire fence, though that kind of seems redundant with those first two in place.Vehicles and maniacal lust for power sold separately.Thousands of angry employees picketed outside the building, and Frick decided to truck in some nice low-wage workers to replace them. Of course there was the problem of the giant crowd of screaming men outside the plant, so Frick hired 300 Pinkertons--old timey mercenaries with a terrible name--and unleashed them on the crowd. All hell broke loose. It turned out the striking workers had guns, too, and dynamite, and a cannon. Several people were killed on each side, and dozens more wounded, before once again the military intervened to break things up.Figuring that this Frick !@#$%^& was the real problem, a few weeks later a guy broke into Frick's office and shot him in the neck. Twice. At this point Frick rose up (presumably laughing deeply while his wounds suddenly healed before the assassin's eyes) and fought back. The cops came and arrested the assassin, and Frick was back to work in a week. And by "back to work" we mean he quickly fired 2,500 workers, and halved the pay for the ones who were left.Frick wouldn't die until 27 years later, when somebody presumably remembered to put a stake through his heart.#3.William Bryant and Francis MayWho?William Bryant and Francis May were the owners of the Bryant and May Match Company. For quite a while, if you were a smoker you had Bryant and May matches in your pocket. Also the blood and tears of children. Why They Were !@#$%^& Bosses:Look, if you ever have a chance to take a job that requires you to first travel in a time machine to Victorian era England, don't do it. This is Scrooge era here, when filthy children roamed the streets, eating rats and doing adorable song and dance numbers. So how shitty of a boss did you have to be to become the subject of huge public backlash in those days? Let's examine the Bryant and May method.First, you hire nothing but young, teenage girls. There were plenty of them around, they had no other opportunities, and they weren't likely to beat you down with lead pipes when they got fed up with your !@#$. You work them 12 hours a day, and pay them in the neighborhood of four shillings a week (the equivalent of $20... in today's money). The exact amount Corey Feldman was paid to be in The Lost Boys sequelSince forcing the workers to scrape by on quite a bit less than what it costs to buy food still wasn't keeping morale quite low enough, they imposed a series of petty fines for a long list of offenses--everything from going to the bathroom without permission, to having dirty feet. When one girl let a machine jam up rather than have it tear off her finger, she was told the machine was more important, dammit, and to never let it happen again. When another girl did get her hand mangled, she was given the boot. Can't make matches one-handed!However, Bryant and May couldn't help but notice the other match companies were still making more money. What were they doing wrong? Clearly they weren't abusing their employees enough... was there some kind of torture device they could be using? Maybe if they just let wild badgers run loose on the production floor? They had a better idea. They had been making their matches with the extremely flammable but otherwise safe red phosphorous. But there was this other kind, white phosphorous, that was way cheaper. And there was absolutely no downside.Oh, except it would literally eat your face off when you handled it.Seriously. They called the condition phossy jaw. It was caused by breathing the fumes for too long. The symptoms start with toothache, which led to swelling, abscesses and then a putrid discharge caused by your jaw bone actually rotting inside your head. Then your jaw would actually start to glow green. It fucking glowed. The only treatment was jaw amputation, which had to be done before organ failure killed the victim.Keep in mind, Bryant and May knew this; white phosphorous matches and the corresponding side effects had been around for decades. The girls at the factory finally went on strike, figuring horrifying deformities were the final straw. The whole "glow in the dark face-rot" won the sympathy of labor activists at the time, and the women eventually won the right to experience something less than David Cronenberg-levels of horror at their workplace. The Bryant and May company, of course, stayed in business for decades and made its owners huge amounts of money.#2.Max Blanck and Thomas HarrisWho?Max Blanck and Thomas Harris were the owners and operators of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company, moncler quincy (http://www.doudoumonclerquincy.com/), which made lady's blouses. Why blouses are called "shirtwaists" is lost to time, if by "time" you mean us not caring enough to go check. Did they only make the waist part of the shirt? We'll never know. Why They Were !@#$%^& Bosses:Blanck and Harris employed an almost entirely female workforce for the same reasons as Bryant and May: young, many of them immigrants, all with nowhere else to go. They paid six or seven dollars a week (again, giubbotto moncler (http://www.giubbottimonclersitou.com/), !@#$ money even in 1909) and when workers walked out demanding better conditions, the pair hired thugs to beat the !@#$ out of them. When the garment workers' union finally came to an agreement with other manufacturers, Blanck and Harris said hell no.On top of all this, it seems like a minor thing that they also locked one of the main factory exits from the outside, to supposedly prevent theft by employees. Minor, you know, unless there's a fire. But why would there be a fire in a factory full of machines, strips of dry cloth, tissue paper and smokers? Where there had been fires twice before? On March 25, 1911, the inevitable happened. Some women made it out before one exit filled with smoke and flame. Others made it onto the fire escape, which collapsed. The rest were trapped inside, banging on that locked door, while they were cooked alive. All told 146 people died, the worst fire in New York history (a record that would stand all the way until 9/11).Blanck and Harris were charged with manslaughter. Luckily for them they had way more money than the plaintiffs, and they hired Max Steuer, the Johnny Cochran of his day. He tore apart the testimony of the survivors, hinting that the whole thing was a conspiracy by the evil labor unions, and that no one could prove the door was actually locked. Sure, they found the lock in the burned out rubble, still very much in its locked state. But couldn't it have been tampered with? By the unions? The unions!Blanck and Harris got off. But Blanck was arrested two years later for--get this-- locking his fucking workers inside another factory. Holy !@#$!They had his !@# now! Justice would be served! Oh, wait, jordan chaussure (http://www.airjordanchaussure.com), no. He was fined $20.But wait! Twenty-three families did successfully sue over the Triangle fire and won... $75 each. So, that's sort of justice, right? That's almost 2,000 bucks right there?Wait, did we mention that Blanck and Harris filed a claim with their insurance after the fire? And got $60,air jordan chaussure (http://www.airjordanchaussure.com),000?#1.Henry LoebWho?Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, 1968 - 1971. Unemployed jackass, doudoune moncler (http://www.doudoumonclerquincy.com/), 1971-?Why He Was An !@#$%^& Boss:If there's one thing a city thrives on, it's a rich subculture of homosexual artists who will paint murals on all the downtown buildings. Next in line is the services it provides. And no service is more vital in the sweltering, stanky South than getting the trash off the streets, so you'd think the mayor would want to keep the sanitation workers happy at all costs.Does this look like the type of man you'd want to cross?Unfortunately things worked a little different in the late 60s, and things worked way different in Memphis. Especially when the mayor was the white, wealthy Henry Loeb, and the sanitation workers were black. So, it's one thing to do job that still paid minimum wage after 15 years, and involves picking up trash in a city that didn't require any kind of bags or cans at all, so people could just fling the !@#$ onto the curb as part of their "the negroes will get it" system.A system supported by many [dirty racists].But it's another thing to do the job for a boss like Loeb, who layered on one arbitrary rule after another, purely out of dickishness. Workers weren't allowed to stand in the shade of a tree. They got 15 minutes for lunch. But, worst of all, were the trucks; the old, broken-down machines were ridiculously unsafe, as employees told Loeb again and again. Finally, one of those trucks malfunctioned and crushed two workers to death, pulverizing them into the garbage. The employees went on strike, and the city council immediately decided that what they had been doing was pretty shitty even by the standards of the late 60s South. They voted to give in to the union's demands, and everyone lived happily ever--Oh, wait, no. We forgot about Loeb. Loeb rejected the council's decision, then sent in police to fire mace and tear gas at demonstrators. At this point the sanitation strike became a national civil rights cause, bringing a certain Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to town, along with tens of thousands of protesters. Loeb declared Martial Law, and brought in 4,000 National Guardsmen.King addressed the sanitation workers on April 3rd, 1968. That, in fact, is the reason he was still in Memphis the next day, on April 4th, 1968. The day he was assassinated.Yes, the world is basically one big orchestra of assholes, playing in concert.Needless to say, in the wake of Dr. King's assassination, Loeb and the city finally gave in to the striker's demands. Then they reneged on the deal, and the workers had to threaten a second strike before Loeb was finally forced to give in, his well of douche having finally run dry.

The U.S. ambassador to Ankara Francis Ricciardone called on Turkey and Israel to keep diplomatic channels open, Turkish Hurriyet Daily News reported Thursday.
The United States hopes that Turkey and Israel would normalize their relations as soon as possible, Francis Ricciardone was quoted as saying.
The U.S. envoy expressed sorrow for the recent developments of Turkish-Israeli relations, adding that Turkish-Israeli relations are of crucial importance for the regional stability.
On May 31, 2010, Israeli commandos raided Mavi Marmara, a humanitarian aid flotilla heading for Gaza, killing eight Turkish nationals.
Turkey demanded Israel to make a formal apology, offer compensation to the families of the victims and end its blockade on Gaza following the event.
Israeli officials stressed that Israel would not apologize for its soldiers' acts of self-defense while "regrets the loss of life. "
The United Nations set up a panel to examine the incident. The panel's long-awaited "Palmer Report" was handed over to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sept. 2.
The report said Israel's interception of the vessels was " excessive and unreasonable," while the flotilla acted "recklessly" in attempting to breach the naval blockade. It also said the Israeli naval blockade on Gaza was imposed as a "legitimate security measure" to prevent weapons from entering Gaza by sea.
Ankara announced last week the downgrading of diplomatic relations to the level of second-secretary and the suspension of military cooperation with the Jewish state. On Tuesday, Ankara went a step further, announcing the suspension of trade with Israel's defense industries and promising to follow up with additional sanctions.
Further, Turkey also launched measures pertaining to freedom of navigation in the Eastern Mediterranean and prepared to demand a review of the Israeli blockade over Gaza by the International Court of Justice.

An old miser, christian louboutin pas cher (http://www.chaussureslouboutinpascher.com/), because of his exceptional thrift, mercurial vapor (http://www.footballchaussuresmagasins.com/), had no friends. Just before he died he called his doctor, lawyer and minister together around his bedside. "I always heard you can't take it with you, but I am going to prove you can," he said. "I have $90,000 in cash under my mattress. It's in three envelopes of $30,000 each. I want each of you to take one envelope now and just before they throw the dirt on me you throw the envelopes in." The three attended the funeral and each threw his envelope into the grave. Two men have died in a helicopter crash near Rockhampton in central Queensland of Australia, local media reported on Thursday.
Three people were aboard when the helicopter, from a North Queensland charter company, crashed in dense bushland at Shoalwater Bay, near Rockhampton, at about noon (local time) on Thursday, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) said.
A man who survived the crash has been taken to Rockhampton Base Hospital by a rescue helicopter.
Two other men on board at the time were found dead at the scene, according to AAP.
Due to the isolated location and dense bushland, a recovery team would be deployed to the crash site on Friday, police said.
Rescue helicopter pilot Brad Nagy told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio it was "extremely vegetated and wooded" terrain.
"From the pinnacle where I dropped them off on the winch down to the crash site which is only about 150 meters away, it took them at least 15 to 20 minutes to get there," Nagy said.
"It's that heavily vegetated."
